For last week’s memorial day paper my editor came to me for ideas on what to put on the cover of the Calendar Section. The story was previewing the summer arts on the Vineyard. I came up with the idea of the ferry bringing in the summer arts. So I utilized a great photo by Sam Low of the Island Home, and then added in some examples of the Summer Art festivities from photos that I took last summer. I made sure to hit all the big events: Built on Stilts, Jabberwocky, Illumination Night, The Vineyard Playhouse and the All Island Art show. We don’t get many opportunities to play around like this at the Gazette, but I sure had fun making this illustration. So far I’ve gotten some pretty good feedback. What do you think?

The image is black and white, because the Gazette is all black and white. Normally I work in color, and then covert it to B&W later, but I only had Sam’s photo in B&W. I think it would’ve been fun to try this in color though, I think it would’ve popped more.
I am a photographer currently living on Martha's Vineyard. I have been working as the only Staff Photographer at the Vineyard Gazette which affords me the opportunity to shoot a wide variety of people events. Ranging from school committee meetings to Celebrities and even Presidents.
